Katniss is annoyed to see that she and Peeta are dressed exactly alike. There were a lot of people, a lot of stunts, and we were doing as much as possible practically. It is their first day of training, and Katniss and Peeta meet with the rest of their team in the dining room. Some of the bigger scenes in these natural environments, like the battle in episode one, was really difficult. Being out in nature like that, especially in the fall and winter of British Columbia, was difficult. Lawrence: It was a very fun but very hard show to make because we were in the wilderness and pretty far from any cities. What do the huts look like? How are people navigating?Ĭlark: What was the hardest part to film? How long after civilization had vanished does the story take place and what would things look like and what would remain? We built out a blindness bootcamp with our consultants and how that crosses over with our art and props department. We had a think tank with blind consultants and an evolutionary biologist and a survivalist, and all these different people come in to brainstorm ideas. Lawrence: I'm not sure about spin-offs, but there was definitely a lot of thought about building the world. Those were not contacts, those were effects that were done in post.Ĭlark: Yeah, I was going to ask what people wore to appear blind. We're not doing crowd duplications and things like that, but sometimes we'd have to augment real environments. It was so vast we couldn't age it all appropriately for the time period.įor the most part, everything is real. Sometimes we would have to make a village a little bigger than we could afford to build, or when we're shooting inside Queen Kane's dam, we were inside a huge abandoned paper mill on Vancouver Island. So we were always in real environments, which would sometimes get augmented with visual effects. We didn't step on stage until episode six. Travis Clark: How much of the series was practical versus CGI effects?įrancis Lawrence: I don't know if I can give you a percentage, but we shot, for the most part, on location for the first five episodes, and episodes seven and eight, as well.
